How to practise

  1. Choose an interval and drone. Compare Pure ratio and Equal temperament, then move the cents slider.
  2. In Listen and answer, hear the pure reference first and the question second.
  3. Decide whether the upper tone is flat, pure or sharp relative to that reference. Reduce the difference as it becomes easier.

Questions

Is pure tuning always better?

No. Just intonation uses simple frequency ratios for a given harmony. Equal temperament divides the octave into twelve equal semitones and lets fixed-pitch instruments change keys. The musical context determines which target is useful.

What is the beating I hear?

Nearby frequencies in the tones’ harmonics reinforce and cancel in a repeating pattern. The display compares the matching harmonic pair for the selected ratio. Its frequency difference is not the distance between the two fundamental notes.

What does the quiz save?

Only the first answer, interval, drone setting and cents difficulty are recorded. Exploration and replay do not count. Save progress separately if you want to compare results on another day.
